At least once a week, I get a phone call that goes something like this:

“My computer is broken, but I need you to come to my house. I’m afraid if I unplug it, I’ll never figure out how to put it back together again.”

I completely understand that fear. If you look behind your desk, it probably looks like a “spaghetti monster” of tangled black wires. It’s intimidating! However, requesting a house call for a solvable shop issue is often a waste of your money.

The sad reality: Half the time I drive out to a client’s house, I discover the computer needs a specific part or extensive testing. I end up having to unplug it myself and drive it back to the shop anyway.

Here is why you should conquer your fear of the cables, and a foolproof guide on how to do it.

Why the Shop is Better (and Cheaper)

  1. Lower Cost: House calls almost always carry a premium service fee for travel and on-site time. Bringing it to the shop saves you that trip charge immediately.

  2. Faster Turnaround: In the shop, we have all our tools, spare parts, and diagnostic software within arm’s reach.

  3. Better Testing: At your house, I can sit there for an hour. In the shop, I can run stress tests overnight to ensure the problem is truly gone.

The Foolproof Guide to Unplugging Your Computer

If you are worried about “Humpty Dumptying” your computer (taking it apart and not being able to put it back together), use these three tricks.

1. The “Smartphone Snapshot” Trick

Before you touch a single wire, pull out your phone.

  • Take a wide photo of the whole back of the computer.

  • Get close and take a photo of exactly where the monitor cable plugs in.

  • Take a photo of where the sound/speakers plug in.

  • Pro Tip: When you get home, you don’t need to remember anything. Just look at the photos!

2. The “Tape & Tag” Method

If photos aren’t enough, grab a roll of masking tape or painter’s tape and a sharpie.

  • Wrap a piece of tape around the cable.

  • Place a piece of tape right next to the port on the computer.

  • Label them both “A”, then “B”, then “C”.

  • When you get home, just match “A” to “A”.

3. The “Shape Game” (It’s Hard to Mess Up!)

Computer engineers actually designed these ports to be “idiot-proof.”

  • USB: Rectangular. It only fits in USB slots.

  • HDMI/DisplayPort: These have slanted corners. They literally cannot fit into the wrong hole.

  • Ethernet (Internet): Looks like a big phone jack. It only fits in one spot.

  • Audio: These are color-coded! Green plug goes in the Green hole. Pink plug goes in the Pink hole.

What Should You Actually Bring?

If you decide to bring your computer in, you usually do not need to bring the mess of cables!

  • The Tower: Yes.

  • The Power Cord: No (we have hundreds).

  • The Keyboard/Mouse: No (unless they are the specific problem).

  • The Monitor: No (unless the screen is the issue).

Save your money for the repair, not the travel time. Unplugging your computer is easier than it looks, and with a quick photo on your phone, you have nothing to worry about!

But the reality is that it is very HARD to actually plug it in wrong, all that you need to do is match the shape or/and color of the plug.  You almost never can go wrong.
