This will be the first in a series of posts about how to do various tech things.

This is an Acer Aspire One D257. I am upgrading it from 1GB to 2GB today. I wanted to make a video on how to do it.  This video is valid for most of the newer Aspire Ones. This is basically how you open the door, once in the door you can open upgrade the hard drive or replace the keyboard also. This laptop is designed to work with DDR3 8500, you can put faster RAM into it but it will not make it any faster.

To open your Acer Aspire One D257, first remove the battery, then unscrew the bottom panel (often under rubber feet/battery), and use a pry tool around the edges to release clips, working carefully to detach the keyboard and bottom case to access internal components like RAM or the hard drive. For component access (RAM/HDD), look for dedicated doors with screws on the bottom; otherwise, you’ll need to pry off the main bottom casing after removing screws.

General Steps for Accessing Internals (RAM/Hard Drive):
  1. Power Down & Remove Battery: Shut down the netbook, unplug it, and slide the battery release latches to remove the battery.
  2. Locate Access Doors (for RAM/HDD): Flip the netbook over and look for small doors or panels with “Door” labels or screw indicators.
  3. Remove Door Screws: Unscrew any screws holding these doors in place (often 2-5 screws).
  4. Open the Door: Use a spudger or flat tool to gently pry open the door, often marked with a “door release”.
  5. Access Components: You can now access the RAM (push clips out to release) or remove the hard drive caddy (usually 4 screws).
For Full Disassembly (Keyboard/Top Case):
  1. Remove Bottom Screws: After the battery, remove screws under rubber feet and the hard drive door.
  2. Pry Keyboard: Open the lid, find latches or use a pry tool (like a guitar pick) at the top edge of the keyboard to release it.
  3. Disconnect Keyboard Cables: Open the brown connectors for the keyboard and touchpad ribbon cables to free them.
  4. Remove Bottom Case: Pry around the edges of the bottom case to separate it from the palm rest/keyboard deck, working your way around the perimeter.
Tips & Warnings:
  • Be Gentle: Use plastic pry tools (spudgers, guitar picks) to avoid scratching or breaking plastic clips.
